"A bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work" is a common saying among golf enthusiasts. My wife and I have been at an Excellence Resort this week in Cancun, Mexico.
It rained the first three days we were here, but on the third day, we spent a few hours by the pool (there is a lazy river around the resort).
I will admit that "a rainy day in a tropical paradise is better than a good day at work." Yesterday, we finally made it to the beach! It took a friend of ours getting out there around 6:45 AM to save a spot for us!
The Excellence Resort Playa Mujeres Cancun lives on the Northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Someone told me that Mujeres Island is just 13 miles off the coast of Playa Mujeres and acts as a shield, keeping the seaweed on the beach to a minimum.
That is a good thing. The island also keeps the waves low, so we haven't had to worry about riptides. The resort also has a perimeter with a rope and buoys surrounding their beach, limiting vacationers from getting too far from the shoreline.
One of the things I love about going to the beach is lying in a chair (in the shade) and just listening to the surf. Yesterday, I couldn't hear the surf, but that was fine. I was reading a book on my iPad.
I plan on writing an overview of our time here at Playa Mujeres, but these are some of my thoughts today.
The Collaboration
Not everyone has a "Higher Power," but mine is the God found in the Holy Bible. I believe God created the Earth and everything in it. Playa Mujeres is a wonderful collaboration between man and God, taking God's creation and constructing a fantastic resort.
The pools, fountains, and gardens are beautiful. These are complemented by creative walkways and strategic lighting (at night).
The Amenities
The amenities on the beach and around the pools are wonderful. The reclining lounge chairs are comfortable, and their coverings (constructed like the huts you might see in the movies) are authentic-looking. They block the sun (and rain) when you need them.
Each room has a nice porch or balcony with a table, two chairs, and a small sunning bed. Our king bed sleeps comfortably, and our walk-in shower has a detachable, adjustable shower head and a rainfall shower from the ceiling. I LOVE the rainfall shower.
The Food
The resort has twelve meal options, from room service to international-themed food. I've enjoyed most of my meals this week, and we still have two nights to go. I've eaten things I do not normally eat. Some things have been good, others not so good. I'm grateful for the opportunity to expand my southern meat-and-potatoes palate.
We'll be back home this weekend, so I'll have a fuller overview in the coming days. If you've made it this far, I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts.
Sounds like a great time, Mike. Can’t beat sand, sun and ocean!
